Work is made of people
Behind every contract, project and order there is someone.
The value of a relationship lies inside the relationship, in the people who keep it standing.
We talk about companies, markets and sectors as if they were abstract entities. But an order is signed by a person, and promises are kept by people too. Every working relationship, in the end, is a relationship between people.
This seems obvious, yet it is easy to lose sight of. Under pressure from deadlines and numbers we start seeing roles instead of faces: the buyer, the supplier. And we forget that on the other side there is someone with their own worries and their own way of working.
The best professional relationships are the ones where this is not forgotten. You know who you are talking to and can tell when they are having a bad day. That knowledge does not make the work less serious. It makes it more effective, because it cuts misunderstandings and builds the trust needed when something goes wrong.
Work relationships also last longer than jobs. Colleagues change company and clients change role. Those who have treated people well find them again, years later, in unexpected places. Those who have treated them as means find doors closed.
None of this requires being friends with everyone. Respect and keeping your word are enough, two simple things that are still the first to go when time is short.
Starting from the human, at work too, means remembering that every result passes through someone. And that the quality of those relationships is worth as much as the quality of the work.
